Smoking and Cats

Hi everyone! Samson here to talk about a very important issue. I'm putting my serious face on now.

Mommy is a smoker and she's trying to quit. Not that we want to lay any guilt trips down but WE do not want to smoke too! As you can see by the photo, I tried it once when I was young and foolish. I think I was trying to get Deli to think I was a tough guy or something but it didn't work and she just laughed at me. Anyway, we found this article that hopefully will encourage her by making her realize that it can make us very sick. We think she knows this already and we're sure that she's not purposely trying to hurt us but we don't think she completely realizes what smoking around our little lungs can do to us! She's always tried to keep the room ventilated and smoke near the window but that is simply not enough. We are putting our paws down!

She is supposed to have surgery on March 26th and the doctor has told her she needs to quit at least one week before that. We're going to try to encourage her as much as we can to severely cut down before then (if not quit completely) and to not smoke around us! She's already committed to not smoke around us so that's a relief but we'll really only be totally happy when she stops completely. We love her and want her around for all of our years (Delilah thinks that Torties live longer than other cats but I have my doubts).

Go Mommy, Go! And remember that we do not want to choke (okay, maybe a little bit of a guilt trip heehee)

Hi Samson,

Tell your mommy that MY momma used to smoke just a little bit a long time ago and she quit. If my momma can do it, your mommy can do it!! Besides, if the smoke clogs up Deli's little lungs she won't be able to chase those soccer balls!!

Wishing you all the best - I know first hand how hard it is to quit! (The nicotine patches helped both me and my sister quit, but they don't work for everyone.) And it really is bad for cats, so it helps to know that too.

Quitting to smoke can be very hard, that's the truth. It was very hard for our mom who smoked quite heavily - that was 6 years ago by now. She holds the theory that if quitting is that hard, you won't fall back so easily. It's well worth all the effort our mom says, smoking is really pretty useless and nothing more than an addiction. She can't believe nowadays that she did it. We are holding all our paws crossed for your mom. She can do it. Oh, ours suggest to stop completely and not try to cut down. She read somewhere that cutting down has the psychologic effect that every cigarette is a reward, like in "I was so good and haven't smoked in 3 hours, so I can smoke one now and really enjoy it." and that is the wrong thought. It helped our mom that she wanted to prove to herself that she can quit. She made the little trap for herself to say that she'll quit for six months and then can go back to it. OF COURSE she didn't go back to it!!! Phew, that was a looooong comment, excuse us. We are sending positive vibes, too. And a lot of purrs of course! Siena & Chilli

Best of luck to your mom! And just think of all the toys the cigarette moneys could buy!

It's good that you are trying to help your mom quit smoking because it's not good for her and certainly not good for your little lungs for her to be smoking. I'm sending her positive thoughts that she quits for good!
