The Sniffles

I've been sneezing for a few days and yesterday and last night it got really bad. I sneezed so hard that I hit my chin on a rock in the abandoned aquarium that Sammy and I sleep in. It looked more painful than it actually was, but I loved the doting I got from Mommy and the Ball Guy.

Mommy didn't sleep because she was so worried about my sniffles. As soon as the vet opened this morning she called and got an appointment for me to go in. The vet was very kind (although I didn't like that she pulled me out of my carrier and put that pointy thing in my behind!!). She told Mommy that I had a URI and it probably just flared up from stress. She said I probably caught it when I was on my own as a kitten or from my mother and that it is a recurrent thing. The vet wants to wait until Monday to see if I can fight the infection off myself but if it continues to get worse, I'll have to take antibiotics. I'm eating well and have no fever but I'm not as active as I usually am. I just feel yucky! There was also a little bit of an infection in my left eye that Mommy got cream for to treat it. I'll be fine soon but Mommy needs to take a pill; a chill pill! She worries too much about me although I can't say I hate the attention ;).

We got an awesome award from our buds Franklin, Dobby and Tasha and Mickey, Georgia and Tillie and we're really so thankful! We're going to post about it tomorrow because Mommy looks like she ran a marathon and I am tired too so we're going to take a cat nap. Poor Samson will have to find something to do while we snooze because he feels fine!

P.S. Mommy wanted me to ask about something and I almost forgot. The vet recommended a nutritional supplement called Viralys which is L-Lysine HCI that is supposed to boost my immune system. She bought the gel but wants to read about it first (she doesn't let us take anything without knowing about it first). She wanted me to ask if anyone else is taking it or has heard of it. She'd greatly appreciate any feedback :)

Delilah, I am sorry that you are feeling sickly. Lysine is a nutritional supplement that helps fight the herpes virus. At the shelter, we give all the cats a little bit of lysine ground up in their Stinky Goodness.

Feel better soon!

Deli, so sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. I'm glad your mom took you to the vet ASAP, but sorry that she was so worried about you (I would be, too!) Hope the sneezes go away soon.

That's too bad that you're sick! I've never had to take an antibionic. I hope you get well soon...I'll be purring for you!

Hi there! Yes, us kittens here at Furrydance got a URI, probably from our mommy, and we took the Viralys in a powder form (comes in a tastey gel too) that Teri just mixes in with our stinky goodness. It is a good product in either form, Teri likes the powder, but it also comes in a tasty new biscuit treat we all like, but you know every cat is different on what it will eat.
Here's more info on how L-lysine works:
Herpesviruses as a group are highly dependent on the presence of an amino acid called “arginine.” Without arginine, Herpes cannot reproduce. The amino acid “lysine” is taken up by the virus in favor of arginine. We can take advantage of this situation by saturating the virus with lysine and thus suppressing the virus’ ability to replicate. Lysine is also readily available in most health food stores as a tablet or capsule. One should be sure that the formula used is free of the preservative “propylene glycol” as cats can have blood teactions against this compound. A month or so of supplementation is required in order to determine if supplementation has been helpful.
and here's a link to more info on Feline Herpes, also called Rhinotracheitis;

Get better soon!

Mom had to give me that L-lysine stuff. Since I am still more ferral than tame, mom had trouble catching me to give it to me. I had an eye infection when the VET gave ot to us. i was suppose to take it twice a day for 3 months. HA! mom could not get it in me twice a week!

Hi Delilah! We have not taken any L-Lysine personally, but have heard great things about it from vets that our mom's TNR group take the ferals to for spay/neuter. Best of luck!
